They’re made out of meat
by Terry Bisson
“They’re made out of meat.”
“Meat?”
“Meat. They’re made out of meat.”
“Meat?”
“There’s no doubt about it. We picked up several from different parts of the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, and probed them all the way through. They’re completely meat.”
“That’s impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to the stars?”
“They use the radio waves to talk, but the signals don’t come from them. The signals come from machines.”
“So who made the machines? That’s who we want to contact.” Read more…

Don’t yell at your computer.
I’m bringing in the new year with another tech entry. In any case, yelling at your drive won’t help performance at all. In fact, it will hurt it. Sure it’s only 5ms worth, but regardless, vibrations are bad.
Oh Dubai, refrigerated BEACH?
The world’s first refrigerated beach is to be built at a luxury hotel in Dubai so the filthy rich holidaymakers don’t burn their feet on the scalding hot sand.
The revolutionary beach will sit next to the new Palazzo Versace hotel and will include a system of heat-absorbing pipes built under the sand and giant wind blowers, designed to keep tourists cool in the searing 40-50C heat.
The hotel, which is due to open late next year or early 2010, will be controlled by thermostats linked up to computers and feature a cooled swimming pool.

Clark And Michael
Clark and Michael is a CBS Internet television series created by and starring Clark Duke and Michael Cera. The series takes the form of a mockumentary following Duke and Cera’s ambitions to write and sell a pilot for a television series. Influences on the show include comedy group Stella, Arrested Development, British mockumentary The Office, comedian Larry David, The Larry Sanders Show[3] and the Adult Swim block of Cartoon Network. Proof That the Universe Is Broken
Okay, this is going to be my thing on this blog. It’s not tech or archi-[choose your own clever suffix]. This is my legitimate, ongoing account that God or the Matrix robots or the giant, galactic turtle that the elephants ride on, gave up, a long time ago, the effort to convince us that we do in fact live in a realistic, feasible, meatspace environment governed by logic and reason. That or it’s a witty rant blog. Or neither. So for my first entry, I pursue a fact-of-life/raison d’etre both cherished and embarassing for most of the people who waste their time here. I know most of us have e-mailed about it already, but its absence from this forum, while simultaneously being the most talkable-about recent event, could stand no further. Read more…

Garfield minus Garfield being published.
File this under “why didn’t I think of that”.
“Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb.”
