Google’s tools are great.  The design is simple and fairly clean, but there’s room for a lot of improvement.

Helvetical (seen above) improves Google Calendar.  Helvetireader redesigns Google Reader, and Helvetimail is a nice clean skin for Gmail.   If you’re using Firefox, download Greasemonkey and go from there.

“Functional visualizations are more than innovative statistical analyses and computational algorithms. They must make sense to the user and require a visual language system that uses colour, shape, line, hierarchy and composition to communicate clearly and appropriately, much like the alphabetic and character-based languages used worldwide between humans.”

Pizza inspires passion. The most detailed analysis of Pizza Napolentana on the net:

Reproducing this was no easy feat, but since moving to Atlanta what choice did I have? Dominos? It’s been a bit of an obsession. I’ve had a lot of failed experiments. However now I can honestly say that the recipe is fully accurate and reproducible. The final breakthrough came in Jan 2005 when I finally got a handle on the proper mixing equipment and procedure. But do not think that following this will be easy. It’s not. It will still take practice. Many others have confirmed that by following these steps they too have come to near perfection. This may be the most detailed, accurate and complete recipe on the net for making a true Pizza Napoletana.

youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com is an open blog dedicated to pointing out those things that give you that feeling of ‘haven’t I seen that somewhere before?”…

The new Banana Republic store that just opened in London this March put up 2 window displays that are definite “inspiration” of my work without my consent (the only thing they changed are the colors). A friend who was in London took these photos thinking it was my work….and emailed me to check. Take a look:

City of Shadows (1992-1994)

Alexey Titarenko

“The idea of The City of Shadows emerged quite unexpectedly and quite naturally during the collapse [of the Soviet Union] in the fall of 1991. I mean that the concept itself stemmed from my impressions nourished by the everyday reality. At that period, I continued to work on my series Nomenklatura of Signs. Suddenly, at some point I realized that I was struggling with emptiness and that my creative impulses – initially absolutely sincere – were running the risk of contemplating upon ideas no longer valid. This happened because the Soviet people, all these human beings deprived of their individuality and turned into “signs” by a criminal regime, began transforming from smiling and happy-looking “signs” into wandering shadows, even though rejecting the role of a “sign” could result in the loss of life. The year of 1992 was approaching…
