The Burj Dubai BASE jump
Recently it was discovered that the tallest building in the world – the Burj Dubai – had been the scene for a world record (and highly illegal) BASE jump. 1 British man attempted the jump and was successful, while a second man, a Frenchman, was caught before he could jump. They were both arrested and held in Dubai.
What is not known to either the authorities or the world in general, is that 2 men had already succeeded in climbing the tower and base jumping from it without being caught: another Brit and the same Frenchman who was later caught attempting a second jump. They were the first and have gone down as legends in their sport, for claiming the latest jewel in the crown of the sport. This is the story of that jump. – Current
Dubai and the UAE – The Big Picture(s)
Tomorrow will be the grand opening of the latest addition to the skyline of Dubai, United Arab Emirates UAE. The Atlantis Palm Resort, with over 1,500 rooms, will be hosting an opening ceremony with celebrities from around the world tomorrow night. The rapid development in Dubai and across the UAE hasn’t all been easy lately, as infrastructure problems handling rising levels of waste to match massive development, and world financial struggles have slowed progress. Wealthy Dubai continues to grow though, in both land area as new islands are built, and in height as new, taller skyscrapers are planned to best the Burj Dubai, already the tallest in the world. 28 photos total

Eye Candy Architecture Blog
This blog has been set up as an extension of a free weekly e-mail we’ve been sending out for over 9 years. It is our intention to raise the level of design by exposing ourselves to the examples set by others (both good and bad). – eye candy.

Revisiting : Rubber Johnny
Rubber Johnny is a six-minute experimental short film and music video directed by Chris Cunningham in 2005, using music composed by Aphex Twin. The name Rubber Johnny is drawn from a British slang for “condom” as well as a description of the main character, which explains the title sequence. The DVD comes with an art book, containing stills from the film, as well as conceptual drawings, photographs and more.
The concept for Rubber Johnny came from Cunningham imagining a raver morphing as he danced. The idea evolved to the present film, in which Johnny (played by Cunningham) is an isolated deformed (possibly hydrocephalus) teenager kept on a wheelchair and locked in a dark basement with his chihuahua. The film was originally intended to be a 30 second TV commercial for the Aphex Twin album drukqs, using the track “afx237 v7″. However, Cunningham grew to like the concept more and more and decided to expand the concept into a longer length (the original commercial remains in the film in an altered form.) The film was shot partially in infrared night vision on digital video. The film’s music is “afx237 v7 (w19rhbasement remix)”, a remix made by Cunningham; the credits music is “gwarek2″, also from drukqs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_Johnny

Captain America in The Incredible Hulk

Back in the summer when we were caught up in both Iron Man and Incredible Hulk, two rather exciting easter eggs were discovered in both movies. In Iron Man, Captain America’s half-built shield could be seen sitting on Tony Stark’s work desk. In The Incredible Hulk, Captain America himself could be seen frozen in the ice in the Arctic. The only problem – that arctic scene was cut from the theatrical version of the movie! With the DVD due out next week, our friends at Film School Rejects have officially discovered our superhero frozen in the ice, as promised.

A Scythe for Sore Eyes

My first reaction was, “what is this, a HotWheels car?”
It’s really a pity that GAS decided to pour so much effort into a car that makes the Elephant Man look like Brad Pitt because it’s got some amazing engineering under that ugly skin. The twin Magnuson supercharged 5.0-liter engine? Custom built by GAS. The Air Ride Technologies suspension with computer-adjustable ride height? A GAS original. With dual automatically-retracting steering wheels, the Scythe is even configurable for right- and left-hand drive should drivers want to terrify the British or use it to deliver mail.
RIP, Windows 3.1
It looks like Microsoft has finally closed the curtain on Windows 3.1. Believe it or not they’ve continued to make and sell it for 18 years. I bought my copy in 1990 and loved the fact that I could have zmodem running in one window and, um, solitare in another.
